Roofing Contractor in The Heights, Houston
The Heights was Texas’ earliest planned community, and many of its homes are more than 100 years old. Craftsman bungalows sit next to Queen Anne Victorians and new two-story builds. Hiring a roofing contractor in The Heights means finding one who knows the rules and the roofs.
STX Roofing is veteran-owned and has served the Houston area since 2016. We repair and replace roofs on historic homes, new construction, and the shops along the neighborhood’s commercial streets. We also install custom-fit gutters and fix the fascia and soffit that older homes wear out.

Three Historic Districts, Clear Roof Rules
Parts of the Heights sit in three city historic districts: Houston Heights East, West, and South. Not every home is inside one. If yours is, exterior changes can need a Certificate of Appropriateness from the city.
The good news is the Heights has written design guidelines, so the rules are clearer than in most places. The city lists composition shingles as compatible with the districts. Slate and tile roofs are listed as not compatible. For additions, the guidelines allow metal roofs with a matte, non-reflective finish.
Swapping shingles for metal on the main roof of a contributing home is a bigger change. That kind of material change goes before the city for review. Routine work that keeps the same design and material is treated as ordinary maintenance. The city also doesn’t require a certificate to rebuild after a fire or natural disaster, as long as the rebuild keeps the same footprint and exterior features. If you do need a certificate, the city’s historic commission meets once a month, so plan for extra time.
Bungalows, Victorians, and New Builds
Craftsman bungalows usually have low-pitched roofs with wide eaves. Water drains slower on a low pitch, so worn shingles and bad flashing leak sooner. Those wide eaves also hide soft fascia and rafter tails. Our fascia and soffit repair service replaces rotted boards before new gutters go up.
Queen Anne homes are the opposite. Their roofs are steep, with gables, dormers, and sometimes a tower. Steep roofs take more safety gear, more time, and more care in the valleys. That’s where water collects and where most leaks on these homes start.
Newer Heights homes often have tall, complex rooflines on narrow lots. Some mix shingles with a flat section over a porch or balcony. The joint where those meet needs the right membrane and flashing.
Old Decking and Old Trees
Original Heights homes often have board decking under the shingles, not plywood. Boards can split, shrink, or rot around old leaks. During a roof replacement, we check every board and replace the bad ones. Fixing bad boards during the reroof is far easier than chasing a leak later. If your roof needs a new deck, our decking replacement page explains the options.
The neighborhood’s founders planted trees along the streets early on, and many of them are huge now. Limbs rub shingles, and leaves clog gutters and valleys. We point out branches touching the roof and clear debris during inspections.
Signs Your Heights Roof Needs Help
Older roofs give warnings before they fail. Walk around your house and look for:
- Sagging along the ridge or between rafters
- Soft or dark spots on the fascia boards
- Shingles curling at the edges or losing granules
- Stains on ceilings near chimneys or dormers
- Gutters pulling away from the house
A sagging roofline on an old home can mean tired decking or rafters, not just bad shingles. That’s worth a close look before the next heavy rain.
Storms Under the Heights Canopy
Big trees and old roofs are a tough mix in a storm. After Hurricane Beryl in July 2024, the Texas A&M Forest Service found that community trees were among the hardest hit. Soaked soil made whole trees more likely to fall.
After a storm, our storm damage roof repair team checks for limb damage, lifted shingles, and cracked rafters. Russell spent years as an insurance adjuster, so we can meet your adjuster and explain what we found.
Shops and Older Commercial Buildings
The Heights isn’t just houses. Its commercial streets have older brick buildings, restaurants, and shops, many with flat roofs hidden behind short parapet walls. Those roofs collect leaves and water, and the parapet caps and flashing wear out over time.
Restaurants add rooftop fans and HVAC units, and each one is a spot where water can get in. Our commercial roof repair team can patch or replace membranes, reseal equipment curbs, and fix parapet flashing. If a commercial building is in a historic district, check with the city before you change its roof material.
Why Neighbors Choose STX as Their Heights Roofing Contractor
Our owner, Russell Mullin, is a U.S. Air Force veteran and a former insurance adjuster with more than 12 years in roofing. He stays involved from the first inspection to the final walk-through.

Some of our reviews come from homeowners who were told they needed a full roof. We found that a smaller repair would do. On an older home, an honest answer can save you thousands.
Where We Work in the Heights
The Heights got its name because the land sits about 23 feet higher than downtown Houston. The Texas Historical Commission’s marker tells the story of how the Omaha and South Texas Land Company built it in the 1890s. The city of Houston Heights joined Houston in 1918.
Heights Boulevard, with its wide esplanade, runs up the middle of the neighborhood. We work on homes along the boulevard, on the numbered streets, and near the shops on 19th Street. We also serve nearby River Oaks and Montrose.
Heights Roofing FAQs
Can I put a metal roof on my Heights home?
It depends. The city’s guidelines allow metal on additions. Changing the main roof of a contributing home from shingles to metal is a material change that goes to the city for review.
Is my home in a historic district?
Not every Heights home is. The East, West, and South districts have set boundaries. The city’s Historic Preservation Office can confirm your address.
Do I need a permit to reroof in the Heights?
Yes. The Heights is inside Houston city limits, so a reroof needs a city permit and inspection, whether or not you’re in a historic district.
Do you work on steep Victorian roofs?
Yes. We handle steep pitches, dormers, and complex valleys, with the safety gear those roofs need.
Is a roof inspection free?
Yes, for homeowners. We charge for inspections tied to a real estate sale, and that fee goes toward any repairs.
Do you install custom-fit gutters on older homes?
Yes. We replace soft fascia first, then hang new custom-fit gutters so they have something solid to hold onto.
Can you match the look of my original roof?
Usually, yes. Composition shingles come in many colors and profiles, and we’ll help you pick one that suits your home’s style and meets the district guidelines.
