Roofing Contractor in River Oaks, Houston

River Oaks homes weren’t built with builder-grade roofs, and they shouldn’t get one now. Many were designed by architects between the 1920s and 1940s, some with slate, tile, or steep, detailed rooflines. A roofing contractor in River Oaks has to match that work, not just cover it.

STX Roofing is veteran-owned and has served the Houston area since 2016. We install and repair slate, clay and concrete tile, cedar shake, synthetic slate, and premium shingles. Our owner, Russell Mullin, stays on site during the work, so the person who sold the job is the person watching it. We also handle the gutters, flashing, and ventilation that keep a premium roof working.

Deed Restrictions and ROPO Review

River Oaks was planned from the start with strict rules. Its founders, Will and Mike Hogg and Hugh Potter, set up architectural controls and a property owners’ association to enforce deed restrictions. That group is known today as River Oaks Property Owners, or ROPO.

ROPO reviews building and renovation plans. If you want to change your roof’s material, color, or look, check with ROPO before you sign a contract. A like-for-like replacement is usually simpler than a switch from tile to metal, for example.

A few River Oaks homes are also designated City of Houston landmarks. Exterior changes to a landmark need a Certificate of Appropriateness from the city. If you’re not sure about your home’s status, ask the city’s Historic Preservation Office before you pick a material.

River Oaks has been inside Houston city limits since 1927, so a reroof also needs a city permit and inspection. See our Houston roofing contractor page for how that process works.

Slate, Tile, and Look-Alike Options

Natural slate and tile can last a very long time, but they’re heavy and they crack if someone walks on them wrong. A satellite installer or tree trimmer can break pieces without knowing it. We use the right walk boards and replace broken pieces to match.

Some owners want the look of slate without the weight or the price of the real thing. Synthetic slate and stone-coated steel can get close. One of our customers chose a slate-look Euroshield roof and later wrote that our owner was at the house every day of the install.

For clay and concrete roofs, see our tile roofing services. For standing seam and other metal, see our metal roofing page.

Big Roofs, Big Trees, and Hidden Problems

Large homes often have long valleys, dormers, chimneys, and several roof levels. Each one is a spot where water can get in. Chimney flashing on older homes is a common source of slow leaks that show up as ceiling stains. Our chimney flashing repair fixes the seal without disturbing the rest of the roof.

The neighborhood’s mature trees add shade and value. They also drop limbs in storms and fill valleys with leaves. Clogged valleys hold water against the roof, which shortens its life. We clear them during every inspection.

Complex roofs also trap heat in the attic. Good airflow protects the decking and helps a premium roof reach its full lifespan. We check intake and exhaust vents on every visit.

Signs a Premium Roof Needs Attention

Slate and tile roofs don’t wear out the way shingles do. The covering can outlast the parts underneath it. Look for these warning signs:

  • Cracked, slipped, or missing slate or tile pieces
  • Rust streaks from old nails or flashing
  • Stains on ceilings below valleys or chimneys
  • Loose ridge pieces after a windy day
  • Leaves and branches packed into valleys

Often the tiles are fine and the underlayment or flashing below them has failed. In that case, we can lift the tiles, replace what’s worn underneath, and set the same tiles back. You keep the original look and fix the real problem.

Storms, Trees, and Insurance

Hurricane Beryl in July 2024 showed how much damage big yard trees can do. The Texas A&M Forest Service found that community trees were among the hardest hit, and soaked soil helped whole trees fall. Homes under a heavy canopy should get a roof check after any major storm.

Our owner, Russell, spent years as an insurance adjuster. If you file a claim, we can inspect first, meet your adjuster on site, and explain what we found. Also make sure your policy lists the right roof age. The Texas Department of Insurance tells homeowners to confirm it with their agent and to report a new roof so the age gets updated.

How We Protect Your Property

River Oaks homes have manicured lawns, gardens, and long driveways. We plan where materials go before the crew arrives. We run a magnet sweep for nails before we leave, and you get a job book with your warranty details when we finish.

We also give you a detailed estimate. It spells out the materials, flashing, underlayment, and any decking work, so there are no surprises halfway through.

Serving River Oaks and Nearby Neighborhoods

River Oaks covers about 1,100 acres along Buffalo Bayou, next to Memorial Park and the River Oaks Country Club. We work on estate homes near the country club and along the esplanade streets. The neighborhood grew in stages between the 1920s and the 1940s, so roof ages and styles vary block by block.

The East Texas Historical Journal has a good history of how River Oaks was planned and why its deed restrictions matter. We also serve nearby Montrose and The Heights.
