Roofing Contractor in Houston, TX
This city has almost every kind of roof you can think of. There are 1920s bungalows inside the Loop, 1970s ranch homes in the suburbs, new three-story townhomes, and flat roofs on shopping centers. Hiring a roofing contractor in Houston means finding one who knows them all.
STX Roofing is veteran-owned and has served the Houston area since 2016. Our office is in Huffman, on the northeast side of the metro. We replace and repair roofs, fix storm damage, and install custom-fit gutters for homeowners, property managers, and business owners across the city.

Houston Roofs Need a City Permit
Inside Houston city limits, a residential reroof needs a permit. The Houston Permitting Center requires one for full reroofs and for overlays. The permit stays on site. The job needs a city inspection before it’s final. The city lists a processing time of 10 business days, so plan for it in your schedule. Small jobs that replace 100 square feet of roof covering or less are exempt.
Before you sign with any roofer, ask who pulls the permit and when the inspection happens. If the answer is vague, that’s a warning sign.
Houston has no zoning, but many subdivisions have deed restrictions. Some limit roof colors or materials. Check with your HOA or civic club before you pick a new shingle.
Wind and Water Do the Most Damage Here
Roofs here take a beating from wind and heavy rain. On May 16, 2024, a derecho pushed gusts near 100 mph through the area. Less than two months later, Hurricane Beryl came ashore at Matagorda on July 8, 2024. Both storms damaged roofs all across the Houston area.
Wind damage isn’t always easy to spot from the ground. A shingle can lift, break its seal, and lay back down. The next heavy rain finds that gap. Our wind damage roof repair service looks for broken seals, creased shingles, and loose ridge caps.
After a big storm, out-of-town crews often go door to door. Some leave town before a warranty issue ever comes up. We’ve been local since 2016, and our lifetime labor warranty on qualifying home roofs is backed by Directorii, a third party. Ask any roofer who backs their warranty if they leave town.
Older Roofs and Houston Insurance Renewals
Roof age is a big issue for homeowners right now. In our experience, many insurers start pushing for replacement around 15 years. Some carriers raise it as early as 12.
Our owner, Russell Mullin, is an Air Force veteran and a former insurance adjuster. He’s been in roofing for more than 12 years. We’ll give you a straight answer on whether your roof can pass another renewal or needs to be replaced. Also confirm the roof age listed on your policy. The Texas Department of Insurance tells homeowners to check it and to report a new roof so the age gets updated. Read more about insurance renewals and older roofs.
Roofing Services We Offer Across Houston
For homes, we handle full roof replacement in Houston, leak repair, and ventilation upgrades. We install architectural and Class 4 impact-resistant shingles, standing seam metal, tile, and Euroshield roofs.
For businesses, our commercial roofing team installs and repairs TPO, PVC, modified bitumen, and metal. We work on retail centers, warehouses, churches, and apartment communities.

Commercial and Apartment Roofs in Houston
Big flat roofs have their own set of problems. Water ponds in low spots, seams pull apart as the building shifts, and rooftop equipment adds dozens of holes that each need a seal. A leak on a warehouse or an apartment building can shut down a business or send tenants to the front office.
We work with building owners, property managers, and general contractors. For low-slope roofs, we install TPO, PVC, and modified bitumen, and we offer roof coatings and restoration when a full tear-off isn’t needed yet. Commercial work comes with a 2-year labor warranty on top of the manufacturer warranty.
We also set up yearly maintenance plans. Regular checks catch open seams and clogged drains before they turn into ceiling stains.

- Bondable up to $750,000, with an A+ BBB rating

How to Check Out Any Roofer
Whoever you hire, ask these questions first. A good roofer will answer every one without dodging.
- Do you pull the city permit, and when is the inspection?
- Do you carry general liability and workers’ comp insurance?
- Where is your office, and how long have you been in business?
- Is your estimate written and itemized?
- Who backs your labor warranty if something goes wrong?
- Will you replace flashing, pipe jacks, and vents, or reuse them?
- Who will be on site each day, and who do I call with questions?
- How do you clean up nails when the job is done?
We carry general liability, workers’ comp, and commercial auto insurance. Our office is at 25419 FM 2100 Rd in Huffman. We’re happy to show proof of coverage. Our owner, Russell, is on site during jobs. We run a magnet sweep for nails before we leave, and you get a job book with your warranty details at the end.
Heat, Humidity, and Attic Airflow
Summer heat is hard on shingles. A hot, stuffy attic bakes them from below while the sun hits them from above. Poor airflow can also trap moisture, which leads to mold and rotted decking.
Good attic ventilation helps a roof last longer. It can also take some load off your air conditioner. We check intake and exhaust vents during every inspection.
Houston Neighborhoods We Serve
We work across the city, from the Inner Loop to the Lake Houston area. In Montrose, we see bungalows with low-pitched roofs next to new townhomes with flat sections. Midtown is mostly townhomes, condos, and apartment buildings with low-slope roofs.
In The Heights, historic district rules can shape your material choices. In River Oaks, deed restrictions often do. On the northeast side, Kingwood homes sit under heavy tree cover and need regular debris checks.
Houston Roofing FAQs
Do I need a permit to replace my roof in Houston?
Yes, inside Houston city limits. A reroof or overlay needs a residential roofing permit and a city inspection. Jobs that replace 100 square feet of roof covering or less are exempt.
Do you work inside the 610 Loop?
Yes. We work in Montrose, Midtown, The Heights, River Oaks, and other Inner Loop neighborhoods.
Is a roof inspection free?
Yes, for homeowners. We charge for inspections tied to a real estate sale, and that fee goes toward any repairs we do.
Do you work with property managers?
Yes. We work with property managers on apartment complexes, retail centers, and other commercial buildings around Houston.
Do you have Spanish-speaking staff?
Yes. Our team speaks English and Spanish.
Can you coat a commercial roof instead of replacing it?
Sometimes. If the existing roof is still sound, a coating or restoration can add years of life. We’ll inspect it first and tell you honestly whether a coating makes sense or the roof needs replacing.
Do you offer financing for a new roof?
Yes. We offer roof financing on qualifying residential projects, with no penalty for paying early.
